In 2014 Fons Smits and Laura Davenport started Tulip Tree Creamery in Indianapolis. Laura, whose background is in public health and biology, focuses on sales, marketing, and education. Fons is the cheesemaker. He is originally from the Netherlands and spent most of his career as a dairy scientist, cheesemaker, and consultant at other cheese companies. The milk for Tulip Tree’s cheeses comes from Country Meadows Farm, a sixth generation family-owned grass-based farm in Hudson, Indiana that practices regenerative farming and doesn’t use hormones or antibiotics. All of the Tulip Tree cheeses are made using vegetarian-friendly microbial rennet. We stock their Foxglove and Trillium, and offer the rest of their cheeses and butter through special order.
